Bike Film Fest call for entries

Now that I’m writing about cinema for Momentum magazine, please send me all your bike film stories and information! That doesn’t just mean movies about bikes, it means cycling artists / filmmakers as well. Momentum is about the self-propelled lifestyle, from environmental, economic and political stuff to social, fashion and health angles – so if you have a cinema / video / moving-picture spin that involves human-powered machinery, try me out.

Meanwhile, here’s this CALL FOR ENTRIES from the Bike Film Festival:

Indie Writers Deathmatch!

deathmatch2008I submitted a story to the Indie Writers Deathmatch at Broken Pencil Magazine this week!

I’m posting this in a bid to get the jump on my competition by seizing the search-engine high ground.

I wrote a science fiction short called “Pangea’s Edge” which takes place in Surrey 2040.

You, my fellow travellers, will help me win – by voting for Pangea’s Edge in a series of one-on-one deathmatch rounds on Broken Pencil’s website.

If you’re reading this, you can help – I’ll update this posting when the finalists are announced, and you can click me to the top!

How to Carry a Cat on a Bike

Since the weather’s so awesome for biking, I think you should all check out the latest issue of Momentum in which I demonstrate how to carry a cat on a bike.

What never made it into the issue is the fact that this was Spooky’s first and final ride.  We were taking her to the vet to be put down, after the terrible surprise of cancer that grew behind her right eye and couldn’t really be solved.  That’s a long story which I don’t need to blog about – suffice to say the kitty loved the adventure of riding a bike, in the safety / concealment of her cat carrier.  Oh, the things we learn too late.

In case that crazy issuu.com viewer doesn’t work, it’s on the Momentum site as well (without the picture, though).

International Experimental Media Congress

images logo

There’s a survey you should check out at the site of this Experimental Media Congress in Toronto, April 2010.

It’s a part of the Images Festival in Toronto, and

“This gathering aims to serve as a continuation of the conversations that
took place at the Fourth Experimental Film Congress held in Toronto in
1989. That massive and contentious event, which is well known to many on
this list, attempted to bring together the broad international film
community for a dialogue on the state of the avant-garde.”

Anyone interested in attending, or who feels confident their time spent answering questions is worthwhile for the ripple effect on the worldwide experimental scene… go check it out.

The congress promises to re-open some debates that have been ongoing for decades, regarding canonization of avante-garde artists and institutionalization of marginalized authorities – if ya know what I mean.

I can only assume Zero for Conduct (i.e. me) will be there, rousing some sort of rabble.

Check out Al Razutis’ articles and manifesto pages that hint at the schism caused by the previous conference in 1989, with prominent filmmakers boycotting and avoiding while others considered the event a big success.

I saw the call on FRAMEWORKS which is an extremely long-lived, wide-ranging and international email discussion group about experimental filmmaking.

Breaking the Vinyl Ceiling

Some bands never break the vinyl ceiling.  80’s bands that never made it and now face the prospect of that second-chance 80’s retro fading away into the rear-view mirror.

Posting this music doc about Go Four 3 to inaugurate my new blog (on WordPress instead of Blogger, self-hosted.  Google sux.  The transfer took a loooong time but well worth it.).

Charles Adler: nonsensical smear

This article by Charles Adler is nonsense in form and content.

It’s just wild ramblings trying to vaguely connect the Liberal party leadership handover to a criminal influence-peddling scheme.

Never mind the addled writing style. It’s just plain smear, no real substance, just an excuse to wander through sentences that connect Dion, Ignatieff, Rae, and the Liberals to this new crime by a governor in another country.

It is the Conservative party that has the whiff of election hijinx about them; they were the ones who got raided by the Election feds – like Governor Dead Meat.

But even that would be a vague connection at best. Please don’t write stuff if you have nothing to say.

Tomorrow Collective video online

I just made a new promo for the Tomorrow Collective’s Brief Encounters show. Looking at the whole montage together, it’s awesome – so many different art forms, so much bizarre mash-up entertainment!

The show puts pairs of artists together for the first time, with two weeks to create a live performance for a 3-night show at the Anza club. I did one with Take 5 and it was the most challenging creative thing I’ve ever done.

Launched in November
2005, Brief Encounters is
an ongoing performance
series designed to push
boundaries and fuse
artistic practices.

Xubuntu on OLPC

I finally went whole-hog and installed Xubuntu on my OLPC / XO laptop. I am too worn-out by the process to actually post screencaps or photos so I posted someone else’s!

Instructions that I followed are right HERE. I used the XO itself as the Linux box to create the SD card / format / partition it etc. I used my Mac G5 to download the torrent of the Hardy tarball and put it on a Fat32 USB drive.

Digital Shrine at Parade of Lost Souls!

I’m curating a digital shrine at Parade of Lost Souls! Please make a digital shrine and send it in, or text message / twitter during the Parade!

Call for submissions

Digital Shrine at
Parade of the Lost Souls 2008
Oct 25th, 2008,
Grandview Park,
Vancouver, BC
Time: 6.30 PM, procession at 7:00 PM

The Parade of the Lost Souls is a lively commemoration of the cycle of life and death, and of facing fears in order to live life to its fullest. Costumed stilt walkers, jugglers, dancers, skeletal brides, blessed witches, ghastly ghouls, and prancing pixies lead a walking procession through the neighbourhood to honour the dead, wake the living and celebrate.
