Seeking short SF films for VCON screening in Vancouver!

SEEKING SHORT SCIENCE-FICTION & FANTASY FILMS for a 1-hour program at VCON SF & F convention October 4-6 2013 in Vancouver, BC.  Deadline for submissions is August 5.

Do you have a short SF&F film, a good standalone excerpt, or a fantastic trailer that we could show?

The definition of Science Fiction and Fantasy is quite broad – so give it a shot! Vancouver-made films will be given priority.

VCON HAS A PIRATE THEME THIS YEAR!  But that isn’t necessary for your film to be included.  It would be cool, though.  Arrrr.

At the convention, screening organizer Flick Harrison will also do a reading from his unpublished SF novel, HOME IS IN THE HARD DRIVE – but that is a separate event.

The program may tour if there is support for it from other cons.

Please submit links – preferably non-public, un-internetted films – to my contact button at the top of this page. The word VCON must be in the subject: failure to do so might result in your submission being misfiled!  Details are below.  No submission fee charged, but no screening fee paid.  Sorry!

And last but not least, as the organizer of this screening, this applies to me, so it will also apply to you, the generous filmmakers offering their work to show at the event:

You will want to purchase a membership if you’d like to attend member-only areas of the convention outside of the session you screen in. You don’t have to, of course, but then, aside from the screening, you would be restricted to visiting the areas of the convention that we open to the public (our Art Show and the Vendor Hall and, on Friday evening, our book launch event).  Weekend memberships are currently $45 for adults with discounts for Students, Seniors and Youth under 19 at http://vcon38.eventbrite.ca/. At the door a weekend membership is $60 or one day memberships can be purchased at the door for $22/$33/$22 on Fri/Sat/Sun respectively.

Check this page again right before you submit.  If I get overloaded with entries, I will close submission early.

Deadline:  August 5.

Length: 15 minutes or (preferably) less

Submission Format:   Online, either publicly or on a private page.  I’ll prefer films that are not publicly available on the interwebs.  With enough notice, I can send you a snail mail address to mail a DVD.  I could also receive via dropbox or google drive etc.

Screening Format:  any good-looking digital format, output with minimal compression.  I will ask for a full-quality master file that I can compile to Blu-Ray for the event.

FILMS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE SUBMISSION.  No limit on how new / old the film must be.  Limit 2 films per submitter.

YOU MAY SUBMIT STANDALONE EXCERPTS FROM LONGER WORKS but it is you who must do the chopping.

YOU MAY ALSO SUBMIT TRAILERS if they are really really awesome and the film is available somehow or other.

Check out the VCON site and schedule which should be up in LATE AUGUST.

  1. I blog often and I genuinely appreciate your information.
Your article has really peaked my interest. I’m going to bookmark your blog and keep checking for new information about once a week. I subscribed to your RSS feed too.

    1. Hey,

Is your name ellenblue, or is that just your email address? I can’t figure out if your comment is spam or not – you link to a publisher that seems more committed to seeking submissions than selling books… which is listed as a “Pacific Northwest” business but your email address is in at “.de…”

And, well, your comment seems pretty vague and generic, I mean, you blog often… where?

Sorry if I’m misreading this – comment spam is really getting sophisticated these days…
